Well, a few weeks back I changed the background colour. The old grey was depressing me and I thought my new lighter grey was much better... It turns out some people disagreed, and by making the change I provoked the reaction along the lines of "Why can't I pick the background like <insert some other blog here>. Also he/she takes better pictures than you!"
Well maybe <insert some other blog here> does take better pictures than me, but damn it if I can't write better code!! So please welcome the background changer version 1. It runs off JavaScript, I'm afraid, but if you have JavaScript turned off, you should not notice any difference (let me know if you do!). If you do have JavaScript, you should now see 6 coloured boxes next to the title, and the result from clicking on them should not surprise you...
I've put a lot of work in to making this cross-browser, by which you can read I put an initial effort in making it work in almost all browsers and then put twice as much as effort again making it work in Internet Exploder. Having said that there's only so far I was prepared to go so if you do use Exploder you might notice a a bug or two. One I know about is that the rollovers stop working if you change background. If I can find a fix I'll put it up but in the meantime I recommend you do yourself a favour and get a nice standards compliant browser like Firefox.
I've already had a little feed back ("6 colours might be a little OTT and the boxes look odd") but please, please let us know what you think so we can continue to improve your experience. Be it a bug or any other improvement we'd love to hear from you.
There's a few other minor enhancements I won't document but if you notice them and like/hate them let us know about that too....
Well, we've been up a few months, and I've been trying to gather some statistics on who's visiting. I've identified 144 unique visitors to the site, so it's not been wildly busy. On the bright side I reckon about a third of all the people who do visit come back at least once again, which I think is pretty good
I've also been trying to find out how big a screen people are using when they visit my site. I originally set the site up to be able to be viewed on 800 by 600 screen, as this is the most popular resolution. Given the nature of the site though you may not be to surprised to learn that only 2 people (that I recorded the screen size of) have visited with that resolution, and neither of them seem to have come back! So I've re thought my decision, and pushed the recommended size up to 1024 by 768
The positives are that most of you out there should be seeing pictures that fill most of your screen, or at least more of it. The potential negatives are the files a bit bigger so download times may suffer. Another is the pictures may be tall enough now that it's pushed the thumbnails down so you have to scroll to see them. If either of these negatives are effecting you, let me know and you're not happy. Alternatively if you're dead chuffed with your bigger pictures, let me know too!
